With the fate of ‘Fringe’ still hanging on the line, the executives producers and writers have decided to hedge both bets and film 2 endings for this year’s season (and maybe series) finale.
The two endings taping was confirmed by John Noble who plays Dr. Walter Bishop on the FOX show during the opening of the Paley Center’s ‘Television: Out of the Box’ exhibit. One potential ending will wrap up the current storylines while the other will leave one more thread open as a jumping point for another season. According to Noble, the big questions will be answered including the matters around Olivia’s “death” and what David Robert Jones’ role is in all this. “[Jones plays] a very big part, but not as big as you think,” said Noble, “There’s something bigger.”
Joshua Jackson, who playes Peter Bishop has also commented on the two endings, “The writers have given themselves a device by which we can tell a fifth-season story without having to leave this season’s story open.” Jackson continued to tease fans by adding, “The door to the fifth season is opened in Episode 19 (airing April 20). If you watch that, you’ll have an understanding of where they want to take the series.”
At this time the only information FOX has given about episode 19 is that it is called ‘Letters of Transit’ and will involve the the Observers and the team engaging in a battle in the year 2036.
In a tweet earlier this week executive producer/showrunner Joel Wyman tweeted that a decision on whether or not a fifth season would be ordered was due this week:
As of this writing, Wyman has not tweeted that a decision has been made and the show is still in a holding pattern. He did tell fans, however, that if a 5th season is ordered, it would be for only 13 episodes instead of the usual 22.
So it’s back to “no news is good news’ but either way, the series is prepared to give the fans some closure to the series if the ax falls but also ready to continue with another season if not. This is a great example of hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see like everyone else. Keep checking back as once we hear what the fate of ‘Fringe’ is, we’ll let you know!
