We’ve played the “what if” game before with Henry Cavill being up for the role of Edward in the ‘Twilight’ movies and how other actors were considered for various roles. Now we have one with Emily Blunt.
You may recognize Blunt from her role as Meryl Streep’s senior assistant Emily in ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ but she was also recently seen as Miss Piggy’s receptionist in the ‘The Muppets’ and she played Princess Mary in ‘Gulliver’s Travels.’ But Blunt as the Black Widow in ‘Iron Man 2’ or as Peggy Carter in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger?’ Believe it or not, she was offered both roles!
According to interview with NY Magazine, Blunt revealed that she was first offered the role of The Black Widow but turned it down. I guess Marvel studios really liked her as a year later, they asked if she’d take on the role of Peggy Carter.
Here’s Blunt’s explanation as to why she didn’t take on either parts:
“Usually the female parts in a superhero film feel thankless: She’s the pill girlfriend while the guys are whizzing around saving the world. I didn’t do the other ones because the part wasn’t very good or the timing wasn’t right, but I’m open to any kind of genre if the part is great and fun and different and a challenge in some way. I would love to do a comic-book movie or a science-fiction film that would scare the bejesus out of me. Maybe I need to be James Bond!”
Blunt has revealed that she is open to acting in any genre as long as the movie challenges her which is probably why she took on the role as Sara in the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt time travel sci-fi film ‘Looper:’
“I just did ‘Looper,’ because it’s so original and breathtakingly cool. The time-travel aspect is just a backdrop to visit this heightened world, where you’re atoning for something and attempting to be more than you’ve been.”
There you have it! Personally, I think Scarlett Johansson fits the suit rather well and Hayley Atwell did a pretty good job as Peggy Carter. What gets me is which role did Blunt not think was very good and which did she pass because the timing wasn’t right? Your guess is as good as mine!
