When the announcement was made a few weeks ago about the impending ‘Insidious 2’ from the director/writer duo of James Wan and Leigh Whannell, there was no word as to what cast from the first film, if any, would be returning for the sequel. The original film starred Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as the parents of a young kid who was used as a conduit for demons to try and break in our world.

At the of the announcement, Leigh Whannell was confirmed to be working on a the script for ‘Insidious 2’ and Wan was back on board to direct. In an interview with horror site Bloody Disgusting, Whannell did mention that the pair wanted to get the original cast back on board. Whannell said, “James and I both feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film.”

There’s still no word on whether Wilson and Byrne will be returning, but in an interview with Dread Central, Whannell did let it slip that two other characters will indeed be returning. The characters of Specs and Tucker, played by Whannell and Angus Sampson respectively, are a duo of paranormal investigators and assistants to Elise (Lin Shaye). Whannell had this to say on the pair’s return:

I can say that yes, my character will be seen in Insidious 2.  It may probably bum a lot of people out, though, to hear this news. It’s part of the reason I don’t even read the internet message boards anymore; there was this hatred that spewed out from fans saying ‘I hated those guys! They sucked! They ruined the movie!’ so there will probably be a lot of people out there who will be disappointed to hear that the Specs and Tucker characters will be coming back.

Personally, I enjoyed the Ghostbusters-like humor that Specs and Tucker brought to the otherwise tense movie, but apparently I’m in the minority. So what do you think? Are you happy that these characters are back on board for the sequel? Or does this ruin the idea for you altogether? Comment and let us know!
