Less than 3 weeks since the dismissal of Patty Jenkins as the director for ‘Thor 2’, the producers have now announced her replacement and it’s ‘Game of Thrones’ director Alan Taylor.
The announcement should come as no surprise as he was mentioned on being on the short list for directors along with fellow ‘Thrones’ director Daniel Minahan.
Taylor is better known as a small screen director. Besides ‘Game of Thrones’, he’s directed ‘Oz’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘The Sopranos’ (which he earned an Emmy for) to name a few. His last feature film was ‘Kill the Poor’ in 2003 so it will be interesting to see how he will approach this big screen project.
‘Thor 2’ will be Taylor’s biggest theatrical film job and directing a sequel to a big hit puts some pressure on the director’s shoulders. At least with Jenkins, she had already proven herself on the big screen with her film ‘Monsters’ which earned Charlize Theron an Oscar.
The hiring is a relief to Marvel as it means they will be on schedule for the November 15 release. As to whether or not Natalie Portman had a say in the hiring, we’ll never know (as you recall, she was very unhappy with the firing of Jenkins).
So…any ‘Game of Thrones’ fans out there who care to give us some insight as to how well you think Taylor will do with ‘Thor 2?”
