Posted Friday, December 16th, 2011 02:01 pm GMT -4 by
The original ‘Dune’ trilogy stands out as one of the best science fiction trilogies of all time. Frank Herbert deserves to be mentioned alongside the science fiction giants of his day such as Asimov, Heinlein, and Clarke. As with some of the works of those giants,...
  • Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies About Cloning

Posted Thursday, December 8th, 2011 08:18 pm GMT -4 by
Humans have been fascinated by human cloning ever since it was imagined by futurists and subsequently proved to be scientifically possible. For many people who do not believe in an afterlife, children are the only genetic way to achieve a sense of immortality, and even that...
  • Underrated Sci-Fi Movie: ‘Æon Flux’

Posted Friday, November 25th, 2011 09:00 pm GMT -4 by
Following the announcement that Charlize Theron will star in the new AMC sci-fi show ‘Thunderstruck’, it’s an appropriate time to mention ‘Æon Flux’, probably her most underrated sci-fi movie. IMDB.com users give it a 5.4 out of 10 with approximately...
  • Is ‘Inception’ Cyberpunk?

Posted Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 09:00 pm GMT -4 by
I consider ‘Inception’ to be the best cyberpunk film since ‘The Matrix’. It scores an 8.9 out of 10 on IMDB.com, which is a very high score for a major production like this. However, some would argue that ‘Inception’ does not fit within the...
  • Among The Best Science Fiction Novels: ‘Stranger In A Strange Land’

Posted Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 09:00 pm GMT -4 by
Considered a groundbreaking novel in science fiction literature, ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ constantly challenges reader expectations for the “alien living on Earth” story. The book was written by Robert Heinlein and first published in 1961. In the following...
  • Lesser-known Science Fiction Novels: ‘The Saga Of Pliocene Exile’

For those fans of multi-million year time travel into the past who have been disappointed with the FOX ‘Terra Nova’ show, I offer a good alternative. A four-books series called The Saga of Pliocene Exile features time travel to six million years ago. The series was...
  • Fresh Look At Asimov’s ‘Foundation’

Posted Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 02:00 pm GMT -4 by
We reported recently that Asimov’s ‘Foundation’ is being adapted for film. ’Foundation’ is considered as one of the best science fiction novels of all time, so it is no surprise that Hollywood wants to capitalize on that popularity, though past...
  • Lesser-known Sci-Fi TV Show: ‘Harsh Realm’

Posted Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 01:30 pm GMT -4 by
Other than ‘Firefly’ and ‘Dark Angel,’ my third choice for the science fiction TV program that was prematurely canceled (by FOX, naturally) and deserved to have at least one more season is ‘Harsh Realm.’ The show was unfairly trashed by critics...

With the announcement of a Hollywood adaptation of  Isaac Asimov’s ‘The Caves of Steel,’ the timing is right for a fresh analysis of the book. This is the first book in Asimov’s Robot Series. It was first published as a novel in 1954 by Doubleday. It...
  • The Alternative To Science Fiction Novels: Short Fiction

Posted Monday, September 19th, 2011 09:00 pm GMT -4 by
Many people have read science fiction novels, and not all of them are regular SF readers. It’s a safe bet that not nearly as many people have read SF short fiction such as short stories, novellas, and novelettes. Reading short fiction is analogous to watching films. They...
  • What Is Biopunk?

Posted Sunday, September 18th, 2011 07:00 pm GMT -4 by
Upcoming genetic and biological enhancements may give outcasts the tools necessary to be the virtuous (or villainous) rebels of the future. That is the essence of biopunk: subversives using futuristic biotech. I consider biopunk to be a sub-genre of cyberpunk. Biopunk settings...
  • About The Novel That Inspired ‘Blade Runner’

Posted Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 08:00 pm GMT -4 by
Of those people who have seen Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner,’ only a small percentage of those people have read the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel that the film is based on: ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ This is unfortunate, because the book is...
  • Top 5 Alien Invasion Movies

When scientists were learning more about other planets such as Mars and Venus in the 1940′s and 1950′s, the data was tantalizing but not complete enough to know if there were advanced life forms on those planets. This fired the imagination of writers and the general...

What follows is a quote from ‘Snow Crash’ that has multiple levels of meaning when applied to the entire book: “She’s a woman, you’re a dude. You’re not supposed to understand her. That’s not what she’s after…She doesn’t...
  • Young Adult Sci-Fi TV: ‘Roswell’

Posted Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 09:31 pm GMT -4 by
Historically, it has been difficult for teen girls and young women to find science fiction television shows that are geared toward them. I’m talking about futuristic programs with no supernatural fantasy or horror elements. Therefore, shows such as ‘Buffy the Vampire...
