Kit Harington as Jon Snow

There was a general assumption about where Jon Snow was heading at the end of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones‘ and now actor Kit Harington has clarified that most of us were correct in our guesses. Currently up for an Emmys for the Best Actor in a Drama Series award, Harington will likely long be associated with the character and is being asked about him once more.

Snow’s arc came to a close in the final scene of the series where we saw Snow leaving Castle Black and heading beyond the Wall. While it wasn’t entirely clear if he went as a member of the Night’s Watch going out on patrol, just escorting the Free Folk to safety before returning, or joining them to start a new life.

Most of us felt that he was going to end up with the Wildlings and start fresh, free of the politics of Westeros and according to the actor:

“[S]eeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with — the Free Folk — it felt to me like he was finally free. Instead of being chained and sent to the Wall, it felt like he was set free. It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing [in killing Daenerys], as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released.”

And now Jon Snow’s watch has ended. For a character who not only saved the Seven Kingdoms and had to sacrifice the second love of his life to do so, it was nice to see him get sent off on a relatively positive note. This likely isn’t the end of his adventures as Snow will probably be helping the Free Folk regain their way of life. He could potentially return to Winterfell down the line to visit his sister, but his future is something we’ll likely never learn unless George R.R. Martin shares more of his fate in the final novel.

Do you feel that being “finally free’ is the perfect bittersweet ending for Jon Snow? Is there anything you would have changed about Snow’s arc in the series? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
