Jude Law Captain Marvel

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information that may be considered SPOILERS for ‘Captain Marvel’, so proceed with caution.

On Friday, ‘Captain Marvel’ producer Jonathan Schwartz finally admitted that Yon-Rogg is in the film, stating:

“Yon-Rogg does pop up, yeah. He’s an important part of the mythology.”

He did not confirm that this is who Jude Law was playing, but at this point, he doesn’t have to, as the ‘Captain Marvel’ toys have begun rolling out with the name “Yon-Rogg” clearly emblazoned on the packaging.  While the toys wear helmets, it’s pretty clear that this is Law’s character, as it is the only Kree figure in any assortment.  It’s pretty clear that Law’s role is important, so it makes sense that these toys are of his character, as other notable characters like Gemma Chan’s Minn-Erva, Lee Pace’s Ronan and Djimon Hounsou’s Korath didn’t get toys, at least not in the first waves.

Among the Yon-Rogg toys that surfaced this past week were a Funko Pop! and a Hasbro Marvel Legends action figure (right).  On the back of the Marvel Legends figure, the description for Yon-Rogg reads:

“Leader of the Kree Starforce team, Yon-Rogg is a hero among the Kree and a key asset to the Supreme Intelligence in the war against the Skrulls.”

Law’s role in ‘Captain Marvel’ has been kept firmly under wraps until now.  It has been rumored that he was playing both Yon-Rogg, a notorious villain in the comics, as well as Mar-Vell, the character who was Marvel Comics’ first Captain Marvel in print.  Mar-Vell was a heroic character who served as a mentor to Carol Danvers, a role that Law’s character also seems to embody in the film.  But now it seems that Law’s character has a sinister side that will set him at odds with Brie Larson’s titular hero.

Does knowing the identity of Law’s character spoil elements of ‘Captain Marvel’ for you?

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, ‘Captain Marvel’ stars Brie Larson, Annette Bening, Gemma Chan, Mckenna Grace, Clark Gregg, Djimon Hounsou, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Lee Pace, and Rune Temte and blasts off in theaters on March 8, 2019.
