Next Week Netflix Shows Us A Doomed Earth In This Trailer For IO

We’ve seen a ton of post-cataclysmic Earths over the recent years but this trailer for Netflix’s ‘IO’ may be hinting at one of my favorite ones yet. We’re given a world that is almost dead with most of humanity already having left to move to one of Jupiter’s moons. Starring Margaret Qualley (‘The Leftovers’) as Sam who is a young woman that stayed behind as her family made the voyage to humanity’s next home.

She isn’t willing to give up on the planet she grew up on and sends out an ongoing message to any stranded survivors that she has a safe habitat to live in. Life is quiet, until one day Anthony Mackie‘s character Micah stumbles into her home thinking others may have survived as well. Realizing that she is the only one here, he tells her about one final launch which is set to bring any stragglers to their new home.

If cars were readily available the trek wouldn’t be that far or that long, but in a world having fallen apart there is no easy way to get to where the ship is set to launch from. We’ve seen the Earth dying before and various takes where survivors are on their way to a new planet, but this looks to be a nice mix of the concepts that should hopefully give us an original story.
