We’ve previously heard that Adam McKay would “do anything” to write and direct a ‘Silver Surfer‘ movie and it looks like Marvel Studios has been listening. At the very least, Kevin Feige has been, and that is the one ear anyone who wants to work within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe really has to have. The director has previously worked with Marvel Studios having been the one who helped finish writing ‘Ant-Man’ after Edgar Wright left the film. In fact, McKay was at the top of the list to direct it from Marvel’s end as well but wouldn’t due to his friendship with Wright.
That hasn’t kept the director and studio from circling one another for the past few years. Now, with the rights of the Silver Surfer soon to return to Marvel thanks to Walt Disney’s purchase of Fox’s assets this is a movie we could see happen!
When Kevin Feige was asked about McKay’s interest in the character at the Golden Globes he responded that:
“I’ve not gotten a call yet, but I’ve seen Adam tonight, and at a number of these awards, he is as everyone knows an incredibly smart guy he’s an honest to goodness fan and you know did a lot of behind the scenes work on the first Ant-Man film and have you seen Vice? A little cameo, a little Galactus cameo in there that we helped him get. So I look forward to speaking to him more.”
The two have already been working together for a creative way to bring Galactus to the big screen, and now we might see the chance to have it done correctly. Without James Gunn, it is unclear how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to explore the cosmic side of these properties, but the introduction to Silver Surfer and Galactus into this world would be a great way to do just that! It could also be used as the way we’re introduced to the MCU’s take on the ‘Fantastic Four.’
