Hellboy

While the first trailer for the ‘Hellboy‘ reboot seemed to continue a somewhat lighter take on the character as Ron Perlman‘s iteration did, David Harbour is hinting that this won’t be the case. We’ve been hearing for quite some time that the new movie would be darker and have more serious moments and a new interview with the actor suggests that this is true.

According to Harbour when describing Hellboy’s actions:

“There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters. You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood, and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing. We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon.”

This is something which we’ve seen play out to an extent in the comics but wasn’t really shown in the Guillermo del Toro movies. It will be interesting if this is juxtaposed with the light-hearted feel of the first trailer or if that was a red herring and we’re going to be getting a more mature movie in general.

We’ve also got a bonus preview image of the film which shows Ian McShane as Hellboy’s adoptive father as well as a new animated poster which you can see in a Tweet below that!

I really can’t tell how much of this demonic form of Hellboy will appear in the movie. It is being massively hyped for the film but is a scene that likely wouldn’t appear for too long in the grand scheme of things.

What do you think of the new animated poster for ‘Hellboy’? Does it look like Ian McShane’s character will have a healthy relationship with his adoptive son in the upcoming film? Has David Harbour’s comments of Hellboy being used as a weapon and showing that he murders demons going to play into a darker film? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

‘Hellboy’ will rise into your local theater on April 12th, 2019! It stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Thomas Haden Church.
