Sonic The Hedgehog

Last month, the trailer for ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ ripped fandom in half, with some gushing that it looked amazing and others recoiling in horror over the lifelike depictions of Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff, and others.  But if you thought that trailer was something, wait until you get a look at Paramount’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.

The live action/animation hybrid won’t be out for almost a year, but Paramount has released a motion poster that at least offers a tease of what fans can expect.

Whereas the Pokémon characters essentially look just like they do as cartoons, except with a more muted color pallet and real fur, Sonic kind of looks like a human man, with long proportionate (and muscular) legs and arms, with a large mascot-like head.  Of course, the poster doesn’t reveal his face, so we have that horror to look forward to.

But executive producer Tim Miller did spill this info to IGN:

“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”

Miller also indicated that, like the Pokémon, Sonic will have some version of hair, so as not to look naked.

Jeff Fowler makes his feature film directing debut with ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.  Ben Schwartz, who recently appeared in the comedy ‘Night School’, but who may be best known for playing Jean-Ralphio on ‘Parks and Recreation’, voices the title character.  Schwartz has done extensive voice work, as Leonardo on ‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’, Dewey on ‘Duck Tales’, and Rutabaga Rabitowitz on ‘BoJack Horseman’ among others.  Jim Carrey stars opposite him as the villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who will reportedly be entirely live action.  James Marsden also stars in live action as Tom Wachowski.  The film also stars Neal McDonough, Adam Pally, and Tika Sumpter.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ will sprint into theaters on November 8, 2019.
