There is some good news for those of us who are sick of reboots as it appears that M. Night Shyamalan‘s ‘Tales From the Crypt’ reboot is deader than The Crypt Keeper. We’ve known that TNT had canceled the upcoming series in the summer of 2017 to put a focus on Ridley Scott projects though it was never confirmed to be fully off the table. There were rumors at the time that rights issues were the cause and now the famed director has confirmed that to be true.
During a promotional press interview for ‘Glass,’ Shyamalan was asked about the now-dead project:
“I think it’s dead. We tried everything that we could. That was so mired in people that had rights to it, constantly mired from the original comic books to the people that did the original show and that was a very contentious era for that show and who was involved and all the stuff that had nothing to do with me, a generation before me.
I begged them, ‘Please just give me the rights; we’ll do it this way, you’re going to be really happy.’ But it didn’t work out that way, and here we are.”
It sounds like EC Comics, HBO, and Warner Bros. may have all had issues with this moving forward without getting a piece of the pie. As we’ve already got a ton of rebooted anthology shows in the works at this time on top of the original ones which exist, it feels like this is a market which also would have been overcrowded had the series been able to go into development.
