Captain Marvel

Movies get marketed different ways in different territories.  A lot of times, the marketing is tailored to local standards and that appears to be the case with ‘Captain Marvel’, which is set to storm theaters next year.  The Japanese poster for the film bears a new very poetic tagline.  The tagline isn’t just pretty, but it may offer additional insight into the movie’s plot as well.

First, here is the poster:

It appears that the text on this poster translates to:

“Lost Past
Memories Trapped
Powers Gained

Is this me?

The story before the Avengers.”

We already know that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is suffering from some form of amnesia based on the trailers.  At one point, she was an Air Force pilot, but somehow she winds up in outer space, with incredible powers, and joins the Kree army, alongside Doctor Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and others.

In the trailer, Carol crash lands on Earth, more specifically, through the roof of a Blockbuster Video.  But as the footage shows, she seems like an alien, utterly dumbfounded by Earth society.

In the comics, Carol gained her enormous superpowers via the Kree device the Psyche-Magnatron, but the comics recently revised her origin, making her mother a full Kree.  That means that Carol has her superpowers innately, with her exposure to the Psyche-Magnatron simply unlocking them.  That doesn’t explain her memory loss, but presumably, the film will.

The last line, “The story before the Avengers” is indicative of the film’s time setting, which is 1995.  Reportedly, it is Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) interaction with Captain Marvel that eventually leads to him create the Avengers Initiative.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, ‘Captain Marvel’ also stars Annette Bening, Mckenna Grace, Clark Gregg, Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, and Ben Mendelsohn, and will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
