Leprechaun Returns

Another horror classic is getting ready to terrify (or amuse) a new generation.  ‘Leprechaun Returns’ marks a return to the classic franchise, which like the ‘Child’s Play‘ movies featured a diminutive killer and balanced humor and horror in equal measure.  Linden Porco takes over as the titular ghoul, also known as “Lubdan” (although that isn’t his real name), originally played by Warwick Davis in the six original movies.  Steven Kostanski (‘The Void’) directed this film, which is considered a continuation of the original series.  Mark Holton, who starred as Ozzie, the dimwit who first freed the Leprechaun in the first film, released in 1993, returns 25 years later in ‘Leprechaun Returns’.

Here is the synopsis:

“The deadly, wisecracking Leprechaun is back in all his gory glory. When the sorority sisters of the Alpha Upsilon house decide to go green and use an old well as their water source, they unwittingly awaken a pint-sized, green-clad monster. The Leprechaun wants a pot of gold buried near the sorority house, but first, he must recover his powers with a killing spree—and only the girls of AU can stop him.“

So sadly, while it doesn’t appear that Jennifer Aniston will be back, this Leprechaun will be packed with other young victims.  You can see them, as well as Holton and Porco as Lubdan in the trailer below:

Most long-running horror franchises go pretty far off the rails as they progress, and ‘Leprechaun’ is no different.  Like Jason Voorhees in ‘Friday the 13th”s ‘Jason X’, this little monster has even been to spacele in ‘Leprechaun 4: In Space’.  The last two installments took him into a more grounded location, the mean streets of Compton, in ‘Leprechaun in the Hood’ (which costarred Ice-T) and ‘Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood’.

In 2013, WWE Studios released a reboot, ‘Leprechaun: Origins’ with pro wrestler Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl in the lead role.

‘The Leprechaun Returns’ hits digital and on-demand on December 11, 2018.
