Wreck-It Ralph 2

In ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ we saw our video game characters living in the simple setting of Mr. Litwack’s arcade but things are having major changes when the characters head to the Internet, and the directors are opening up as to why they decided to go online. Rich Moore and Phil Johnston likely could have easily crafted a story with new arcade games coming into the store, but instead, they’ve decided that the Internet was the way to go. However, this decision was needed to expand Ralph and Venellope’s story and likely set up the franchise to continue down the line.

According to Johnston:

“Themes have changed, that’s always been at the front of our mind. And Ralph being a guy who has a life that he really likes, so the idea that something would come in and invade his world that would force a change really. That ends up being the steering wheel breaking but the actual change in the internet. And it’s constantly changing and constantly evolving, and for a guy like Ralph who is more of a sort of homebody if you will. Something like that would create a ton of conflict beyond being a big expansive universe.

“It’s a good place to send a guy like that, because comedies are about conflict and there’s a lot of that in the Internet that Ralph is going to bump up against. That was really the why, why the internet, because it’s the worst possible place for Ralph.”

Thinking about what we know of Venellope, it feels like it is also the very best place that she could end up. With this in mind, Moore added:

“We wanted to drive some sort of wedge between Ralph and Vanellope, like Phil was saying that he’s so comfortable at the beginning and so happy that we love to torture our characters. You know? It just feels like it was the perfect bad place to send him. Putting him in this situation where he has to go there if he wants to maintain what he’s got there back at home. It just felt like we had found the right thing.”

As we’ve seen in the latest trailer, the status quo at home is that the controls to Vanellope’s arcade game have broken. If he wants his best friend to be able to stick around, he is going to need to find a replacement control and quickly too.

Do you agree with the directors on why ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ had to go online for the sequel? Will this expand the franchise to continue online down the line or if a third movie happens will it just take place in the arcade as well? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
