One of the fun aspects of the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” movies are the wands so it feels a bit strange that Jude Law’s wand in ‘Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald‘ was created by using CGI. However, there is an excellent and nerdy reason for this to be the case that I’m pretty sure many of the franchise fans here can appreciate!
Dumbledore doesn’t quite have the Elder Wand at this point in his life, and the one he has in the film is going to be a bit different from the one which he’ll one day have.
The problem was, the wand which Law was holding throughout most of the film actually looked like the Elder Wand! J.K. Rowling was going over footage and noticed that meant it had to be swapped out for another one. CGI ended up being an easier course to take than reshooting much of the film. So while filming the movie Law had a wand at his disposal, it will look quite different when the film is in theaters. Now that’s some movie magic!
Word of the CGI wand came from Eddie Redmayne:
“They then had to CGI out that wand for quite a substantial amount of the film. It was replaced with, I think, actually the most beautiful wand of all. It’s very… sculptural.”
We’ve seen from preview stills for the film that he’ll be holding a dork wood root with a stone on the end that is separated by a gold rim. This is entirely different from The Elder Wand which is 15 inches of elder wood and has a threstral tail-core which according to Rowling is a “tricky substance only wizards that mastered death can control.”
Dumbledore hasn’t quite mastered death at this point and doesn’t obtain the wand until 1945 after his duel with Grindelwald. This film is set in 1927 far before that occurs.
