Labyrinth

It’s been a while since there was any news regarding the sequel to the 1986 classic ‘Labyrinth’.  Directed by Jim Henson, the original was a mixture of live actors– David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly– and puppetry.  But most of these creations were a far cry from Henson’s cuddly Muppets.  Together with 1982’s ‘The Dark Crystal’, these two have combined to both enchant and terrify kids of all ages in the decades since.

Director Fede Alvarez has announced that a screenplay for the sequel has been completed and that he has recently met with Lisa Henson to discuss moving forward with the film, with is set up at TriStar Pictures.

“I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We’re very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can’t tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we’re very excited about it so we’ll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they’re larger than life. But that’s one of the projects that I’m very excited about.”

Alvarez is busy at the moment, with his upcoming picture, ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’, due in theaters on November 9, so when Fandango pressed him about ‘Labyrinth’, he simply replied, ““You never know, and really right now, I’m just finishing with this film so I’m not even thinking about what I’m going to do next. But all I can tell you is that I had lunch with her yesterday and it was great.”

Alvarez is also working on a sequel to his breakout horror hit ‘Don’t Breathe’, so that may wind up being his next picture, considering that ‘Labyrinth 2’ will require a lot more preparation.
