Superman Tyler Hoechlin

Just as rumors have surfaced that Warner Brothers is dumping Henry Cavill as Superman in their films, buzz has arrived that The CW is looking to showcase Tyler Hoechlin in his own ‘Superman’ TV series!  It was already known that the upcoming ‘Elseworlds’ crossover between ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’ and ‘Supergirl’ was being eyed as a backdoor pilot for a potential ‘Batwoman’ series, starring Ruby Rose, but now, it appears that the same is true of Hoechlin’s Superman!  If that happens, this will definitely be the highest profile DC show on TV.

Gratuitous

It was previously thought that the big three, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, would only be featured in theatrical films, but since the movies, except for ‘Wonder Woman’, haven’t done well, it appears that WB is looking to television as a better showcase for the DC heroes.

Hoechlin debuted in this role on ‘Supergirl’ in 2016.  He has returned for subsequent episodes and will factor in heavily during the ‘Elseworlds’ crossover, which will be spread over three nights, starting with ‘The Flash’ on December 9th, followed by ‘Supergirl’ on Monday, December 10th and ‘Arrow’ on Tuesday, December 11th.

Hoechlin’s portrayal of the Man of Steel has earned almost universal raves, while the movies featuring Cavill have stalled.  Reportedly, Warner Brothers no longer views Superman as a box office draw, making a TV series more logical and possibly more profitable.  ‘Batman V Superman’ was originally supposed to be a sequel to 2013’s ‘Man of Steel’ before it was repurposed into a team-up movie introducing Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.  Warner Brothers had plans to make a proper sequel to focus on Cavill’s Superman, but after ‘Justice League’ lost money, the studio has taken a different approach to its DC Comics movies.  It doesn’t appear that another Superman movie is in any stage of development.

On the other hand, The CW has cast its own version of Lois Lane, Elizabeth Tulloch, which is a huge step toward a ‘Superman’ series.

Syfy currently airs ‘Krypton’ which is loosely based on the Superman mythos, and features Superman’s grandfather.  Similarly, FOX has ‘Gotham’, a Batman-free Batman series.  Should this proposed ‘Superman’ show come to fruition, it would be unique in featuring one of DC’s holy trinity in the present.

What do you think?  Would you watch a ‘Superman’ series starring Hoechlin?
