Brenton Thwaites Jason Todd Titans

The ‘Titans’ pilot was screened on Wednesday at New York Comic Con and the stars were on hand, including Brenton Thwaites who plays Robin/Dick Grayson on the series.  On ‘Titans’, although Dick is suffering growing pains from having been raised under the shadow of Batman, he has not yet taken on the identity of Nightwing.  Even so, after he struck out on his own and moved to Detroit, Batman selected Jason Todd (Curran Walters) to serve as his new sidekick.  This is a move that Dick doesn’t necessarily agree with.

While attending the screening, Thwaites spoke to ComicBook.com and explained:

“Well, Jason Todd has become a replacement for Dick Grayson, so he has fulfilled my position working for Batman.  So there’s a little bit of tension in the scenes where we meet because I have left for a reason. Like I was saying, it’s not the way of fighting crime that I believe in, and Jason Todd is, what I think, being brainwashed by Batman to believe that this brutal, destructive, murderous way of fighting crime isn’t right. So there’s a little bit of tension in me trying to teach him to right those wrongs and to not do everything he says.

“Those scenes, I think it’s episode seven when he comes in, were really fun.  They were really banter-y, and you know there’s a part of Dick Grayson for sure that misses that way of life, that kind of wishes he could get a little touch of what it was like to fight crime with Batman but at the end of the day he really sticks to his belief and really fights for what he believes in and tries to find his own path.”

The wording seems to imply that Dick believes in a more brutal, vigilante-style of crime fighting.  That is something that hasn’t sat well with fans after seeing previous trailers.  But the majority of us have to wait until the show premieres on October 12 to determine just what style of crime fighting Dick engages in.

Regardless, DC Universe has faith in ‘Titans’ and has already ordered a second season.  It will be the first original program from the streaming service and the only one that will debut this year.  Netflix will distribute the show in other countries.
