The CW’s ‘Black Lightning’ has added another character, although whether she is a hero or villain remains to be seen.  Kearran Giovanni has been cast as Cutter, who is described as “a smart, proud, tough and beautiful woman more than able to best a man in combat — a mercenary trained by British intelligence.”  Giovanni may be best known for her role as Amy Sykes on ‘Major Crimes’.  She had a regular role on ‘One Life to Live’ from 2009-12 and has also appeared on ‘Royal Pains’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Designated Survivor’ and ‘Dynasty’.

Not much has been revealed about the new season, so far, but the cast and crew offered a few nuggets.  For starters, the first new episode is entitled “The Book of Consequences: Chapter One: Rise of the Green Light Babies.”  Showrunner Salim Akil explains the dire-sounding title, saying:

“We’re going to deal with the consequences of having discovered the pod children; the consequences of Green Light hitting the streets; and the consequences of Jefferson’s daughters discovering they have powers.”

Jefferson Pierce and his family may have survived Tobias’s attack, but they’re not out of the woods yet. Concerned for the safety of Garfield’s students, the board considers a motion to shut down the school, forcing Jefferson to go to Napier Frank (guest star Robert Townsend) to sway the vote. Jennifer struggles with her powers and her actions have unforeseen repercussions. Meanwhile, Anissa finds a new way to give back to Freeland. Lastly, Lynn continues her quest much to the dismay of Agent Odell (guest star Bill Duke).

Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will have to juggle their burgeoning super powers (and Anissa’s alter ego as Thunder) with their own personal struggles.  Chantal Thuy will return as Anissa’s love interest Grace Choi, which is sure to stir things up.  Meanwhile, Jennifer will struggle with her feelings for ex-boyfriend Khalil, who is emerging as a super villain on his own right, a variation of the comic book crook Tattooed Man.  Jennifer will also struggle with her powers, which are more volatile than Anissa’s… and Jennifer just wants to be normal.

Also, obviously taking a major role is crime boss Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) who was still in power at the end of season one.  Akil says “In the first episode you’ll see exactly what motivates him to ‘burn the city down,’ as he says.”

Sophia Vasilieva has joined the cast as the superhero Looker, although it remains to be seen how the show will interpret the character who has telepathic and telekinetic powers in the book.

‘Black Lightning’ returns to The CW on Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 at 9pm EST, after ‘The Flash’.
