Game Of Thrones

We know that HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones‘ is coming to an end and now George R.R. Martin is talking about when we can expect the prequel to take place. He wasn’t overly clear on the exact date the show will be in relation to what we’ve seen so far, but Martin does mention that they have “tens of thousands of years” that they can cover so I wouldn’t expect that we’ll be seeing the parents or grandparents of any of our characters.

The creator recently shared that the current series “could’ve gone 11, 12, 13 seasons” so you have to wonder how long of a story he has in mind for the upcoming outing. It will also be interesting to see if the new showrunners will give into Martin’s idea for a longer running show instead of keeping it shorter too tell a concise story as David Benioff and Dan Weiss ended up doing.

The time frame was shared by Martin:

“Five other shows, five prequels in development that are based on other periods and the history of Westeros — some of them just 100 years before ‘Game of Thrones,’ some of them 5000 years before ‘Game of Thrones.’”

While they’re likely only going up to 5,000 years before the events in ‘Game of Thrones’ there was a blog post by Martin that expanded upon this number on how much history could be covered:

“All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before GAME OF THRONES (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long) […] We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all.”

Yes, there are “tens of thousands of years of history” which could be mined. How much of that has been even briefly put on paper at this point remains to be seen. While the prequel shows look to be jumping much further back in time, I’m pretty sure fans of “A Song of Ice and Fire” would love some of the more recent events such as “Dunk & Egg” or “Robert’s Rebellion” to get a spotlight at some point.
