The Haunting Of Hill House

Netflix is really looking to scare the crap out of viewers this Halloween.  The streaming service is already releasing a large number of new dark sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies and shows, with even more to go.  On October 12, another ambitious new project will arrive, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’.  This marks the third adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic novel and mixes the typical haunted house chills with deeper family drama.  But unlike the 1963 and 1999 adaptations, both called simply ‘The Haunting’, Netflix’s take is a ten-episode series.  Obviously, this allows the show’s creators to more fully explore the source material in the novel as well as to add modern updates.

‘The Haunting of Hill House’ comes from director Mike Flanagan, who previously helmed psychological horror movie ‘Gerald’s Game’ for Netflix, as well as ‘Hush’, ‘Before I Wake’, ‘Oculus‘ and ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’.  This marks Flanagan’s first TV series.  Meredith Averill acts as co-showrunner and executive producer.

Netflix describes the new show as:

A modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson‘s iconic novel, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ explores a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country.  Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past — some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.

Timothy Hutton headlines the cast as Hugh Crain, while Henry Thomas plays Hugh as a younger man, with Michiel Huisman as Steven Crain, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Luke Crain, Victoria Pedretti as Nell Crain, Elizabeth Reaser as Shirley Crain, and Kate Siegel as Theodora “Theo” Crain.  Meanwhile, Paxton Singleton stars as young Steven, Julian Hilliard as young Luke, Violet McGraw as young Nell, Lulu Wilson as young Shirley, and Mckenna Grace as Young Theo.  Carla Guigino also stars as Olivia.
