The ‘Star Trek’ 50th Anniversary celebration has begun, with Roddenberry Entertainment leading the way by releasing rare memorabilia from its archives for the occasion, one piece of ‘Star Trek’ history posted online every day in 2016. The project is being called ‘The 366 Project” and promises to unearth rare memos, script pages, photos, and documents from the archives. And on top of those 366 treasured pieces of ‘Star Trek’ lore, it seems that EW was gifted with 3 bonus items from the archives, which they released right before the New Year, to help ring in the year of ‘Trek’.

star trek the motion picture storyboard opening

First up is an original storyboard from ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture,’ showing a docking sequence for the Enterprise while the sun dawns just beyond the Earth’s rim. While not the bright spot of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, it was their first foray onto the big screen, and the first re-union of the cast since their untimely cancellation in the 60s.

Next is a shot of the great Leonard Nimoy in his make-up chair, sporting those famous ears that caused him such aggravation over the years. While he swore he would never return to play Spock, claiming he was sick and tired of the ears, as we all know he did come back, and in later years embraced the fame and fandom the role provided, even appearing in the soft-reboot/ alternate universe movie ‘Star Trek’ by JJ Abrams.

originaly script opening to star trek

Lastly is a piece of the script for the first episode of ‘Star Trek,’ which features a markedly different opening narration to the show, which I recopied below:

“This is the story of the United Space Ship Enterprise. Assigned a five year patrol of our galaxy, the giant starship visits Earth colonies, regulates commerce, and explores strange new worlds and civilzations. These are its voyages … and its adventures.”

You will note that nowhere in that narration do they mention “boldly going” anywhere, which shows just how many drafts and ideas Roddenberry and company clearly went through before finally settling on the final dialogue that we know and love today.
