The ‘Doom‘ franchise has built up quite a few iconic enemies over the years and now director Tony Giglio has shared at least one which won’t be making the cut. His upcoming film will likely resonate more with fans than the 2005 release which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but there will still be something missing when it arrives.
The Spiderdemon. Yes, the end boss of the original ‘Doom’ as well as the 2016 remake of the game won’t be appearing in the new 2019 movie adaptation. Here is what Giglio had to say:
Unfortunately, the Spiderdemon won’t be in our film. Tried, but it didn’t work out this time. Maybe in the sequel ;) And, look, I think the 2005 film is an entertaining action film… BUT… i felt it deviated too far the game & didn’t feel like a real adaptation. But it’s fun.

For the visual effects lovers out there, Giglio did share two details on how the movie will look which is likely why we won’t be seeing the Spiderdemon in this outing.
Most everything you’ll see re: the demons was done practically. In this day and age, even Rom-Coms have 100’s of VFX shots. We have plenty of VFX in the film and there will be some VFX sweetening to one of our demons, but no demon is a full CGI creation.

And let me be clear, the Former Humans & 1st wave of demons are 100% practical. We’re simply doing a planned CGI element to another demon that was also shot practically. I really hope everyone loves it.

The movie is slated to have a home release, and if it ends up being a hit, we can hope that the budget will be ramped up for a sequel that could include the iconic Spiderdemon. That being said, it is quickly much clearer as to why it won’t be in the film.
I’ve been holding out for a trailer to say anything one way or another, but with everything I’m hearing, I can only hope that ‘Doom’ will at least get a limited theatrical run as well since this sounds like something that might deserve to be seen on the big screen.
Are you annoyed that we won’t see the Spiderdemon in ‘Doom’? Does the heavy use of practical effects and likely limited budget have this choice make sense to you? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
