big trouble in little china

An announcement in 2015 that Dwayne Johnson was going to produce and star in a remake of ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ left fans and critics nervous and confused. John Carpenter’s original film from 1986 is a cult classic, and Kurt Russell was perfection as Jack Burton. Many fans have been asking why should we reinvent the wheel?

Since the announcement, virtually nothing has been released about the ‘Big Trouble in Little China.’ In a recent interview, Hiram Garcia, President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions (which was founded by co-CEOs Johnson and Dany Garcia) and one of the producers on ‘Big Trouble in Little China,’ was asked about the status of the project and how much the remake would stray from Carpenter’s original. Garcia revealed that the film will not serve as a remake, but will be a continuation of Carpenter’s story. He said:

“There’s a lot of things going on with [‘Big Trouble in Little China’]. We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake ‘Big Trouble in Little China.’ You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of ‘Big Trouble in Little China.’ Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character. So we are just having a lot of fun. We’re actually in a really great space with the story that we’ve cracked. But yeah, no remake. It is a continuation, and we are deep into development on that as well, and I think you’ll start hearing some things about that probably soon.”

This should come as happy news to diehard fans of the original! Making ‘Big Trouble’ happen would certainly make Johnson one of the busiest guys in Hollywood. He is currently shooting Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ and will move right into the ‘Fast & Furious’ spinoff ‘Hobbs and Shaw,’ followed by the highly anticipated ‘Jumanji’ sequel and then original thriller ‘Red Notice’ with Gal Gadot.
