The cancellation of ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ earlier this year marked the end of an era for horror fans. Not only because one more genre show was cancelled before its time, but because Bruce Campbell chose that occasion to announce that he would be retiring from the role of Ash Williams.

Starting with the original ‘Evil Dead’ in 1981, Campbell’s performances as Ash have not made his career, but have arguably defined his career. In fact, despite appearances in countless B-movies and even more mainstream fare like ‘Burn Notice’, it remains the character and the franchise with which he is most strongly associated. Add to that the fact that Campbell’s announcement effectively dashed fans hopes that the series might be continued elsewhere.

But it seems Hollywood’s most famous chin is not quite done with Ash yet. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro, Campbell confirmed that there is a new ‘Evil Dead’ video game in the works and that while he remains committed to his on-screen retirement from the role, that doesn’t extend to voice work. At least not yet. Campbell offered little in the way of concrete information about the game, but did provide the following quote:

“They are doing a video game. A whole immersive kind of dealio. I’ll be Ash for that, because I wouldn’t want someone else’s voice hamming it up.”

This is far from Campbell’s first encounter with digital Deadites, as he has previously provided voice work for an assortment of games, including ‘Evil Dead: Hail to the King’, ‘Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick’, and ‘Evil Dead: Regeneration’. On each occasion, Campbell has returned to his familiar role of Ash.
