Netflix has a new zombie series in the works titled ‘Black Summer’ and has just cast Jaime King (‘Hart of Dixie’) in the leading role! King has a long history in genre work from voice work in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ to starring in such features as ‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’ and ‘My Bloody Valentine.’
The new series is being created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams who are the co-executive producers on Syfy’s ‘Z-Nation‘ which is currently going into its fifth season. These two have a bit of experience with the undead already though this new series sounds as if it will be a bit more serious than the hit that they are known for.
For ‘Black Summer’ King would be “a mother, torn from her daughter, who embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse.”
While anything can be turned into a comedy, nothing about this description makes it sound as if it will be funny and I suspect the duo are giving us a much more grounded take on the zombie apocalypse. With King’s past work having her take on more serious parts in horror in the past I feel that should fit better with her performance as well.
This will be another outing with the undead by Netflix who have already released the series ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ and the film ‘Cargo.’ The first of these also fell a bit more into comedy so it would make sense for the streaming network to differentiate any new offerings from what it is already releasing.
