Doctor-Who-season-11 jodie whittaker

You might think there would be a lot of pressure in taking on a character like the Doctor. After all, this is a role with over half a century of history behind it. Not only that, it’s a role that’s been played by over a dozen actors to date, each of whom is the favorite of passionate fans the world over. But that hasn’t really been the case for newcomer Jodie Whittaker, at least not yet.

Speaking in the latest issue of the Radio Times, Whittaker explained that the sheer scope of the changes the show is undergoing – not only in terms of the behind the scenes turnover but her own position as the first female incarnation of the Time Lord – has actually lessened whatever pressure she might have felt:

“In a way, though, there is liberation in that new direction: the pressure is less for me because I can only do it my way. All the rules are out the window! That’s what makes it so fun.”

But that’s not to say that Whittaker is unaware of the mantle she now carries. Nor is she unconcerned with how her way of doing it might be received by ‘Doctor Who’ fans. In fact, as she explains it, her main objective is the make sure fans are happy with the show, though even then she demonstrates an impressively laid back attitude:

“As long as most people are happy, I’m alright with that because the fans are so loyal and so passionate, and it’s a huge deal to them.”
