With J.J. Abrams being one of the names behind ‘Westworld,’ some might have worried that like ‘Lost’ and with the high concepts involved that it might not be clear on how the show will end. Fortunately, co-creator Lisa Joy has confirmed that they have known how the show would come to a close since the pilot. Of course, we’ve heard that before in other franchises as well such as in the case of the Cylons having a plan in ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ Joy stresses that they came into production with a definite ending in mind.

Joy recently was interviewed and wanted to reassure viewers that ‘Westworld’ did have an end in mind though she didn’t clear how long it might take to get there:

“We have an ending in mind; we’ve had it from the pilot. It’s very emotional, I think. I can’t tell you exactly when that ending will come but I think for every season what we try to do is tell a chapter of the story that gives you closure and then opens a door to a new chapter. The overarching question of the series is, what will become of this new lifeform? So I feel it would be irresponsible to not have an end goal in mind.”

The first season was clearly a setup for this entire tale of seeing artificial intelligence genuinely coming into sentience and the second season has double-downed on that. While ratings did dip a little, most fans and critics are still speaking highly of the concept that has been put into place. With a guiding vision that they are trying to reach, it should hopefully be a story that can continue to grow and not explore random concepts that will back them into a corner and unable to continue plots as we’ve seen some other high concept shows suffer from.

Are you happy to hear that Lisa Joy has an endgame in mind for ‘Westworld’? Do you think ratings will continue to justify the show to last long enough to tell each chapter that they have in mind? Share your thoughts below!
