Jurassic World 3

SPOILER ALERT: If you still haven’t seen ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’, this article discusses mild SPOILERS from it, so proceed with caution.

‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ is still ruling at the box office, but we do know that the third (and final?) movie in this franchise is already being worked on, with Colin Trevorrow who directed 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’ returning and working on the script with Derek Connolly and Emily Carmichael.  ‘Fallen Kingdom’ pleased older fans with the inclusion of Jeff Goldblum‘s Dr. Ian Malcolm in a cameo role and BD Wong, back as Dr. Henry Wu, up to no good, as usual.  But there may be hope that the third movie will bring back two, even more sorely missed human stars– Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant and Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler-Degler.

When appearing on the MTV podcast ‘Seen It, Spill It’, when asked if he felt an obligation to return these two characters to the big screen, for fear of cheating fans, Trevorrow replied:

“I totally agree with that. I would feel robbed too, yeah.”

That doesn’t mean they will appear, but it seems as though an effort will be made to bring these two O.G. protagonists back to the story.

The humans have never been the draw for the ‘Jurassic Park’/’World’ movies.  It’s always been all about the dinosaurs.  Quick!  Name the characters played by Vince Vaughn or Téa Leoni in the previous sequels!  Didn’t think so.  But certain characters have made a stronger impression and as they say, “You never forget your first time.”  Neill and Dern were the main stars of the first ‘Jurassic Park’, but did not return for the first sequel, ‘The Lost World’, which instead positioned Ian Malcolm as the main character.  Neill returned to star in ‘Jurassic Park 3’, but Dern only appeared in a cameo.

As stated, fans were pleased with Goldblum’s small role in ‘Fallen Kingdom’, even though it was disconnected from the bulk of the main story.  Could Alan and Ellie have also popped up in this film?  Trevorrow says that the creators didn’t want to undermine Malcolm’s presence:

“We felt like this was Malcolm’s return. This was his… let him have his moment. I feel that way about everyone, especially Laura [Dern], in that she never got to have her own movie. That identified as being something that’s important. I feel like this moment with Goldblum, because he had this very clear set of ethical questions that he was able to pose for everyone, we just wanted to put the spotlight on him.”

Maybe they’re saving the best for last.  Since the third ‘World’ movie is likely to be the last in the franchise, at least for a few years, the creators may be saving a return by Ellie for that film, since, as Trevorrow stated, “she never got to have her own movie.”  But if they bring Ellie back, it would only make sense to have Alan Grant in the mix as well.

Would you like to see Sam Neill and Laura Dern back for ‘Jurassic World 3’?  Or would you rather Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard be allowed to shine in their final chapter without being upstaged?
