Space Jam 2

It’s been two years since we learned that ‘Star Trek Beyond’ director Justin Lin had joined forces with basketball icon Lebron James to produce a sequel to the film that defined the Nineties like no other work of art. That film, of course, is ‘Space Jam,’ though there has been very little news to come out about ‘Space Jam 2’ ever since. So little, in fact, that you couldn’t be blamed for suspecting that the project had been quietly cancelled.

But fear not! The epic story of the Tune Squad and the Monstars will, in fact, continue, and it may be doing so sooner than any of us expected. No, Warner hasn’t announced a release date or anything like that, but the word on the street is that a trailer is coming. And soon. The exact timing depends on Lebron James himself.

For those of you who don’t follow sports, James is approaching the end of his current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While he does have a player option with the Cavaliers – meaning that he can opt-in for an additional year of his current contract – he is widely expected to eschew that option in favor of free agency, allowing him to move to another team. Regardless, he has until June 29th – this Friday – to make a decision, with the free agency period beginning on July 1st.

And make no mistake, that decision is going to be a media event. As if the excitement of a superstar player announcing the next step in his career wouldn’t be enough to get the cameras rolling, James his going all-in to make the most of the occasion. According to Basketball Society Online‘s Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, James’ announcement will come via Instagram TV, the social media giant’s nascent attempt to compete with YouTube. Once the announcement is made, James is expected to drop a trailer for ‘Space Jam 2’.

But according to Robinson, there’s more to this trailer release than the sheer degree of publicity involved. Citing anonymous sources, Robinson asserts that the trailer – in addition, of course, to marking the public debut of ‘Space Jam 2’ – will itself include the announcement of which team he’ll be heading to once he leaves the Cavaliers.

Yeah, it’s a lot to take in. But soon enough it will once again be time to “take your chance, do your dance at the ‘Space Jam’!
