The Predator

Reboots of old franchises can go either way.  While ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ makes two hits for this revival of ‘Jurassic Park’, the past few years have been littered with the costly remains of ‘Alien: Covenant’, ‘Independence Day Resurgence’, ‘Terminator: Genisys‘, and more.  Can Shane Black‘s ‘The Predator’ follow in the footsteps of the Indoraptor?  Or will it get devoured like so many crunchy space marines?

Working in ‘The Predator”s favor is its director.  Black has delivered such acclaimed and successful movies as ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘The Nice Guys’.  And Black has assembled an all-star cast, which includes Boyd Holbrook, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown, Jake Busey, Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Lochlyn Munro, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Yvonne Strahovski and Jacob Tremblay.

20th Century Fox has unleashed a new red band trailer (meaning it may be NSFW due mainly to language).  At the very least, the film isn’t just star-studded, but if the trailer is any indication, action-packed.

When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

There is a big twist this time around, as it seems that the Predators that plagued the humans in the prior films, were just the opening act.  This time, these old-school Predators become the Prey!

For Thomas Jane, who plays the Marine Baxley, this is a childhood dream come true as he remembers being enthralled by the original movie when he saw it in theaters:

“Predator hit me at the perfect time. Me and my buddies were 13. It was a bullseye. That and Terminator, RoboCop… that was our time. Those movies hit us hard. They were really strong films. I don’t know if you guys remember this, but when Predator came out there was none of that shit in the fuckin’ trailer. It was like a war movie. It was called Predator and you just kind of went and saw it. There wasn’t any internet or nothin’ like that. You friends just go “Dude, you gotta go see it.” They didn’t give it away for you because people respected that back in the day. There was no such thing as a “spoiler alert,” you know? It was pretty badass, I gotta tell you. It was a great time.”

In addition to the trailer, Fox has released a new poster and photos to promote the film:

Fox will send the cast and creators of ‘The Predator’ to San Diego Comic Con next month, so expect even more to be revealed then.

But so far, what do you think?  Can ‘The Predator’ succeed where previous reboots have failed?

‘The Predator’ opens on September 14.
