Pet Sematary

An important part of the ‘Pet Sematary’ puzzle has been assembled as the production has cast its child actors.  In the story, Louis and Rachel Creed discover that the nearby ‘Pet Sematary’ has the power to bring beings back from the dead.  But of course, when that happens, the critters that return are not the same as they were before.  They first discover that when their family cat, Winston Churchill or “Church” for short, returns as a vicious creature.  But that doesn’t stop them from taking extreme measures when one of their kids dies.

Ten year-old Jeté Laurence will play Ellie, the older of the Creeds’ kids.  She is described as “a sweet and sensitive young girl” who is so charming that she wins over their creepy neighbor Jud Crandall, played by John Lithgow.  Ellie is technically the owner of Church.

She appeared in last year’s ‘The Snowman’ with Michael Fassbender.  For such a young performer, Laurence has appeared in numerous projects including TV series ‘The Americans’ and ‘The Affair’, and movies ‘Night Comes On’ and ‘The Ranger’.  She also had regular appearances on the series ‘Friends From College’, ‘Younger’ and ‘Sneaky Pete’.

Not surprisingly, her brother Gage will actually be played by twins, Hugo and Lucas Lavoie.  These three-year-olds are making their acting debut in ‘Pet Sematary’.  Of course, if you are familiar with the Stephen King book or the 1989 movie, you know that the plot mainly revolves around Gage who has a tendency to wander off where he doesn’t belong.

Jason Clarke will play the kids’ father, Louis Creed, with Amy Seimetz portraying their mother Rachel.   Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer are directing.  The pair co-directed the horror movie ‘Starry Eyes’, the ‘Valentines Day’ segment of the project ‘Holidays’ and episodes of MTV’s ‘Scream: The TV Series’.  David Kajganich (‘The Terror’) and Jeff Buhler (‘Nightflyers’) are handling the script.

Along with the announcement of the child actors, a new official synopsis for ‘Pet Semetary’ was released:

“Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Clarke),
who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to
rural Maine discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new
home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall (Lithgow), setting
off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.”

‘Pet Sematary’ is scheduled to haunt theaters beginning on April 5, 2019.
