Considering that Tom Holland‘s “Iron Spider” costume from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ was often rendered in CGI, it should be no problem to simply animate in a new costume to replace it… which looks to be the plan as production on the ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ sequel grows closer. This is one of the only movies that we know for certain will arrive after ‘Avengers 4’ (along with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’). Not only is Peter Parker getting a new costume, but it will visually reflect the internal changes that he has gone through since gaining superpowers, launching a grassroots crime-fighting career, teaming up with Tony Stark, joining the Avengers and… er, not feeling so good.
Louise Frogley served as costume designer on ‘Homecoming’ but is not returning for the sequel. Even so, she seems to have an inside track, as she recently divulged:
“I am not actually working on that film, but the costumes will have very big changes because, in the film, Spider-Man becomes more like man and not teenager.”
Frogley moved on to another Marvel property, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’, which could be how she has kept tabs on the development of the ‘Spider-Man’ sequel. She is now shifting over to Noah Hawley‘s astronaut drama ‘Pale Blue Dot’ starring Natalie Portman and John Hamm.
In the films, Holland started out in a homemade outfit that resembled the Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider outfit from the mid-’90s. Later, Tony Stark gave him a sleeker costume which was basically his most famous suit ripped from the comics page. Then, in ‘Infinity War’ Stark again bestowed upon him an even sturdier uniform, trimmed in gold with mechanical arms that mimicked the “Iron Spider” outfit he wore during the ‘Civil War’ comic.
In the comics, Spidey is most recognized in his original Steve Ditko-designed costume, but he has worn alternate suits at times, including the black symbiote that turned into Venom, the ‘Spider-Man 2099’ mostly-blue costume, and even a Fantastic Four uniform, complete with a brown paper bag over his head.
What costume would you like to see Holland don in the next movie?
