Ant-Man & The Wasp

Director Peyton Reed has shared that ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp‘ had two surprising 80s films that helped inspire the theme for the film. While every Marvel Studios film is considered a comic movie, they’ve all striven to have a unique style as well, so it should come as no surprise that this sequel would have a theme it wanted to follow. While we know that the movie is a follow up to the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ and have an overall mission to rescue Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, neither of these make up the heart of the movie.

What this entree into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is meant to explore is “one crazy night” which is roughly how long the plot of this movie will be.

As to which films inspired ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp’ and why Reed went that route, he explains:

“Well, in terms of when we first started talking about what Ant-Man and the Wasp would look and feel like and the kind of movie we wanted to make, I definitely started talking about things like After Hours and Midnight Run and these things where there’s a lot of forward momentum, and it’s, you know, there’s almost a road movie quality to the movie in that way.

The first movie because it was an origin story, you know, a lot of it took place sort in Hank Pym’s house and these things, and I just wanted to open the movie up and get out and take advantage of San Francisco, because that felt like a different texture for the MCU that, that Ant-Man sort of occupies this corner of the universe, you know, and we wanted to really get outside and explore those elements. And the urgency was really about trying to graft this idea of sort of a search and rescue movie onto that where there was this ticking clock and for whatever scientific reasons if they were going to go, perhaps, look for Janet van Dyne, how do you go about doing that? And it’s an impossible thing, scientifically, but also, if there’s urgency and there’s maybe a window of time they have to do it, it’s about collecting the people, the things, everything they need to do that.”

Had we not already seen a multitude of original films coming out of the MCU I would be having a hard time buying the Martin Scorsese directed ‘After Hours’ being mixed with a little of ‘Midnight Run’ to craft a film. Especially, one starring ‘Antman & The Wasp!’

With Janet having been gone for years, it should be interesting to see what twist Reed has added that makes it a priority to find her now. We’ve already seen a few hints from the commercial as to how this could be thought of as “a road movie,” and I’m also interested into how that will further be included.

With the movie coming out on July 5th, 2018, we don’t have that much longer to wait and see what he has in store for us!
