Aquaman

More images and news from James Wan‘s ‘Aquaman’ film continue to surface.  Yesterday, it was revealed that much like Aquaman in classic comics and cartoons would ride large sea creatures as steeds.  In the latest picture, we see what appear to be two warring factions of Atlanteans about to engage in an all out battle, with one side riding great white sharks and the other on what look like giant seahorses, like Aquaman’s traditional companion Storm.  According to the report yesterday, however, these are actually sea DRAGONS.  Perhaps this is a nod to star Jason Momoa‘s former job on ‘Game of Thrones’, or maybe it’s to make them a bit more formidable in a fight.  Those astride the sea dragons, however, are the soldiers of King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren), while those on sharks are the army for King Orm (Patrick Wilson), Aquaman’s brother who rules their kingdom.

You can see this image below:

Entertainment Weekly has broken down the photo to give some backstory to the epic events of the film.

  1. When Atlantis sank eons ago, it was fractured into seven kingdoms.  (As in the “seven seas?”)  The statues in the background represent the original seven kings of these different territories.
  2. In reference to Orm’s army, producer Peter Safran said, “When you see these Atlantean army riding these sharks, it’s so photo-real it blows you away.”
  3. James Wan said that the sea dragons belonging to King Nereus’ men, from the kingdom Xebel, are a redemption of sorts, of the somewhat cheesy reputation that Aquaman gained from riding Storm in the classic comics and cartoons.
  4. Though the image is tiny, you can see Orm riding “his massive alligator-like ‘tylosaur’.”  Behind them, Willem Dafoe’s Vulko is seen astride “a giant black hammerhead shark.”

Below, you can see a piece of concept artwork for this sequence.

One thing to note, the actual kingdom of Atlantis that Orm rules has not yet been revealed.  The sequence in ‘Justice League’ was on the outskirts.  Judging by what we’ve seen so far, expect something truly eye-popping when it is finally shown!

Expect a lot more revelations before ‘Aquaman’ splashes into theaters on December 21, 2018.  ‘Aquaman’ stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Michael Beach, Willem Dafoe, Ludi Lin, Dolph Lundgren, Graham McTavish, Temuera Morrison, Randall Park, and Nicole Kidman.
