We’ve heard a lot of hints that Spider-Man or Peter Parker could appear in ‘Venom‘ and now the film’s director Ruben Fleischer has weighed in on the matter. He, of course, doesn’t outright say yes or no but he does imply that it is unlikely we’ll end up seeing the wallcrawler in the film. Since it isn’t an exact statement one way or another, this could be being held back as a surprise or an Easter Egg, but if you take it at face value, we likely won’t see our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man hanging around anywhere in the film.
With ‘Venom’ taking place in California, chances are a Spider-Man reference would only have been even feasible if Eddie Brock starts out in New York before heading to the West Coast for his story or if Spidey showed up on television.
According to Fleischer when asked about an appearance:
“This feels very much like Venom’s movie. It’s the introduction of the character. As to where it will go in future movies, and who he’ll run across, I can’t say.”
This was a vague enough statement that could still include Spider-Man in the film, but likely with how Sony and Marvel Studios have put things in place, this isn’t something that we’ll end up seeing happen. We’ve already seen a shift of Venom’s origins from the previews which would eliminate the need for a Spider-Man reference and seem to not fit with the Brock and Parker being across the country from one another.
That, and it would almost feel like they were trying to fit this movie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe if they did end up having Parker or Spider-Man appear at all.
Do you think Spider-Man should be part of the Cinematic Spider-Verse which Sony appears to be trying to put together? Would this take away from the impact of what Marvel Studios has done with everyone’s favorite Webhead so far? Share your thoughts below, True Believers!
