James Mangold Boba Fett

Well, it seems the other shoe has finally dropped.

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm way back in 2012, they quickly announced a slate of ‘Star Wars’ films that included both the sequel trilogy and a trio of anthology films, which have since fallen under the ‘Star Wars Story’ banner. ‘Rogue One‘, the first of those stories, hit theaters in the closing weeks of 2016, and the second – ‘Solo‘ – is due to arrive this weekend. But despite that, there has been precious little word on the third anthology film. Which is to say virtually none.

In 2014, it was announced that the mysterious third film would be helmed by Josh Trank, following the success of his 2011 found footage sci-fi outing ‘Chronicle‘. However, Trank was dismissed a year later, owing at least in part to the tumultuous production of Fox’s ‘Fantastic Four’, which on top of everything else would go on to be a box office disaster. Now left without a director, the film, (which was widely assumed – but never officially confirmed – to focus on fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett) seemed to just quietly disappear.

But you can’t keep a good Mandalorian down, it seems, and the notion of a Boba Fett spinoff has resurfaced, this time with an official announcement. Lucasfilm has confirmed via the Hollywood Reporter that work on a Boba Fett film is underway, with director James Mangold at the helm. Mangold’s most recent (and arguably best known) work is ‘Logan’, the prestige superhero outing that brought Hugh Jackman’s nearly two decades as Wolverine to a spectacular (and Oscar nominated) close.

Whatever connection Mangold’s film has to Tranks abortive effort (if any) is unclear at this time.

In addition to his star making appearances in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’, Fett’s origin was revealed in ‘Attack of the Clones’ and subsequently expanded on in the ‘Clone Wars’ animated series. No plot details for the upcoming film are yet known.
