Godzilla

Toho has released some good and bad news for fans of their take on ‘Godzilla.’ The bad news is that the company sounds like they’re no longer pursuing a ‘Shin Godzilla 2’, however, the good news is that just like Legendary Pictures it sounds as if we’ll have another ‘Godzilla’ Cinematic Universe to enjoy! Yes, folks, this is a great day to be a fan of the King of the Kaiju! We already know that ‘Godzilla’ will soon be crossing over with King Kong stateside but now Toho is ramping up their own monster production!

The news came from Keiji Ota who is Toho’s, Chief Godzilla Officer and helps run the Godzilla Strategy Council within the company which was founded in October 2014. Mr. Ota has plans for the future of the original franchise and states that “…after 2021, we’re thinking of a potential strategy that [releases] Godzilla movies uninterrupted at a rate of every 2 years, although there is a preference for a yearly pace as well.” As exciting as that is, he then expands and drops the shared universe bomb:

“The future of the series and its forwarding developments are very conscious of the method of “shared universe.” Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, etc. could all share a single worldview much like a Marvel movie where Iron Man and the Hulk can crossover with each other.
It is said that each movie can be a possible film production where any one of them could lead a film of their own as the titular character.”

This is just another reason to be thankful for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As to there not being a direct ‘Shin Godzilla‘ sequel, he stated that “Shin Godzilla was a huge hit, but instead of thinking of doing the obvious idea of making a Shin Godzilla 2, instead think about a world that can be used for a long time, I’d rather make a World of Godzilla.”

While the Legendary Pictures deal ends in 2020, it isn’t clear if Toho plans on focusing on their own creations going forward or allowing both takes on ‘Godzilla’ to grace the big screen. I, for one, am hoping that we’ll get both. It won’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that there aren’t in the same world.

Are you excited that Toho is doubling down on the King of the Kaiju? Do you feel that there is enough room in the world for 2 Godzilla franchises or will this be the end of Legendary’s deal with the studio? Share your thoughts below!
