Gwyneth Paltrow Avengers 4

SPOILER ALERT: This article may contain SPOILERS for ‘Avengers 4’, due out next year.  Proceed with caution!

After Pepper Potts’ awkward absence in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, fans were glad to see Gwyneth Paltrow back by Tony Stark’s side at the end of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.  And she was back again at the beginning of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, rocking a form-fitting jogging suit… and what appears to be an engagement ring!  She and Tony shared a conversation in which he revealed that he had a dream in which they had a child.  He then asked if Pepper was pregnant to which she replied no and warned him that if they had a child, his Iron Man-ing days would have to be left behind for good.  Their discussion is cut short with the arrival of Doctor Stephen Strange, as the movie’s action kicks off, with Tony suiting up in armor once more.

However, for fans that picked up the official ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ magazine, they might have caught a slip in an interview with Paltrow:

“Pepper and Tony have had a real long journey together.  She obviously starts as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve.”

‘Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers 4’ shot back-to-back and with Paltrow only playing a rather small role, she might have shot her scenes for both movies at one time.  Perhaps she simply got the events mixed up or didn’t realize how certain events would be split between the two films.

We do know that Emma Fuhrman has been cast as a teenage Cassie Lang, the daughter of Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who appeared as a young child in ‘Ant-Man’, portrayed by Abby Ryder Fortson.  Will several years have passed between the ending of ‘Infinity War and whatever they end up calling the followup?  Could Pepper and Tony have had a child in the intervening years?  Could this be the last straw that forces Tony to hang up the armor for good?  (And allows Robert Downey Jr. to finally step away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe?)

We have a pretty long wait to find out.  ‘Avengers 4’ opens May 5, 2019.
