captain marvel

Marvel’s ‘Captain Marvel’ starring Brie Larson and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck was due to be released on March 8, 2019, but at CinemaCon, Disney unveiled a new release timeline (without specific dates) and it appears the film has been bumped up to winter of this year!  That will mean that Marvel Studios will release four films in 2018.  We’ve already seen the juggernaut that was ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is looking to be one of the biggest debuts ever this weekend.  After that comes ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and now we can look forward to ‘Captain Marvel’ this winter.  It’s possible that parent company Disney decided to fast forward that film’s release to fill the void left by not having a ‘Star Wars’ movie for the holiday season– something that has become a bit of a tradition.

‘Captain Marvel’ is filming now, which hopefully will give Boden, Fleck and their crew enough time to get it finely polished in time for a winter release.

As for the rest of the reveals…

Spring 2018:

These are all pretty much accounted for.  There’s ‘Infinity War’, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, ‘The Incredibles II’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’.

Summer 2018:

Interestingly, Disney is opting to largely sit out the most heavily contested season at the box office.  Their sole offering is ‘Christopher Robin’.

Fall 2018:

Keep in mind, how the seasons are broken up is kind of vague.  Their “fall” releases are more like the kind most studios release closer to Christmas, namely family fare like ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’, ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck It Ralph 2)’ and ‘Mary Poppins Returns’.

Spring 2019:

It’s gonna be a busy one!  Disney has ‘Avengers: Untitled’ (as it was dubbed in the presentation) scheduled along with the live action ‘Aladdin’ starring Will Smith and ‘Toy Story 4’.

Late Spring/Summer 2019:

The live action version of ‘The Lion King’ was directed by Jon Favreau who scored big with his adaptation of ‘The Jungle Book’.  Now he’s back with another animal-centered adaptation.  That will be followed by ‘Artemis Fowl’.

Fall 2019:

Yaaaaasssss Queen!  ‘Frozen 2’ arrives in autumn of 2019!

Winter 2019:

‘Star Wars’ is back in its proper release time, the holiday season.  This is when ‘Episode IX’ arrives.

Which releases are you most anticipating?

‘Captain Marvel’, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Yon-Rogg, Jude Law as Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Colin Ford as Steve Danvers, Kenneth Mitchell as Joseph Danvers, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson and Lashana Lynch in an undisclosed role which is believed to be Monica Rambeau.  It is due… sometime this winter!
