The eighth season of ‘The Walking Dead’ will conclude on Sunday, April 15, with the war between Rick and Negan finally reaching its end. Andrew Lincoln recently spoke about what to expect in the finale, saying:

“I would say this is a smorgasbord. I think you’ve got everything in this one. It’s quite an unusual structure, but it’s very emotional, I hope, because that’s what I felt [while filming]. It’s epic.”

Lincoln went on to share some interesting details regarding the location of the final conflict between Rick and Negan. Instead of hashing things out at the Hilltop or Sanctuary, it seems there could be an entirely new setting for the war’s conclusion. Lincoln explained:

“The location we shot at was phenomenal and unusual. I hope that it’s going to look on screen as good as it felt when we were shooting there.”

The man behind former sheriff Rick Grimes also echoed comments from the showrunner that the last chapter of season 8 will not feature a cliffhanger. Instead, the show will settle the war while planting seeds for what comes next:

“It does feel like it completes something. But it also does feel that it offers a lot of interesting story arcs for the future, which is quite unusual.”

AMC has released a sneak peek scene from the finale. The scene features the Saviors preparing to go to war, and Eugene delivering his latest batch of bullets to Negan. Then Negan goes and repeatedly shoots Rick…of course I mean his Rick stand in!

AMC also released several new pictures from the finale. One in particular has fans spinning theories. In the photo, Rick can be seen in his police uniform (ah, the good old days), holding hands with presumably a young Carl as they walk down a country path. This is a memory that Carl pointed out as one of his favorites in last week’s voiceover. This opens up a whole host of theories about how the season might end, and how Rick may come to terms with Carl’s death.

In an open letter to his dad, Carl pleaded for Rick to end his war with Negan. Is it possible the war ends with no bloodshed? Just a peaceful, optimistic ending with a flashback to better days? It would be a bold move for sure.

Another theory is that Rick could die. After all, we’ve been shown images of Rick slumped against the tree, covered in blood, in several flash forward scenes. Could the image be his very last memory before he succumbs to the apocalypse?

At the very least, fans know they will be getting a final goodbye to Carl. Make sure to have some Kleenex handy!
