AMC Theaters Are Hosting 31 Hour Marvel Marathons Leading Up To The Release Of 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Strap on your adult diapers and get comfy!  AMC theaters are hosting a 31 hour Marvel marathon that will climax with the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.  Dates and pricing have not yet been released, but obviously the films will be broken up into blocks, but it remains to be seen how many movies they will be screening per day/night.  So, for those of you unemployed super fans, get ready to sit.  A lot.

31 hours breaks up to about a day and a half, but it would be flat out irresponsible for a business to hold an event that required people to stay awake for 12+ hours with nothing to eat or drink but popcorn and soda.  Expect this to be a multi-day, maybe even a week-long event.  There are now 18 movies in the 10 year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • Marvel’s The Avengers (2012)
  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Ant-Man (2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)

Looking at the dates, it’s rather remarkable that there was only one Marvel movie in 2010, ‘Iron Man 2’ and NONE the year before!  Compare that to the output now and that’s quite a shift and proof of how popular the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become.

It will be interesting to see if theaters continue to offer these sorts of marathons going forward as Marvel still has ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ before the fourth ‘Avengers’ movie, which is believed to be the kick-off to the future of the MCU.  But by that point, these marathons would stretch to about 40 hours.  After that, the studio has already announced a sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’.  Perhaps by that point, theaters will just chop off the prior movies and start with more recent installments.

Then again, since almost all of these movies are already available on home video, you can always hold your own marathon in the comfort of your own home complete with regular bathroom breaks, smoke breaks and whatever you want to eat or drink.  And sleep.  Sleep is good.
