Star Wars Rebels

While fans of ‘Star Wars Rebels’ are dying to find out what happened to Ezra and Thrawn, Lucasfilm has a different character in mind that they’d like to know more about. Executive producer Dave Filoni has been happy to share details on the closure of the current series while the next animated run is still being planned out and while doing so let the world slip as to who Lucasfilm would like to further explore. In fact, it isn’t any of the fan-favorites but a particular new character who was introduced in the series finale.

If you haven’t had a chance to finish off ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ and you really should, please watch the series entirely before heading to the spoilers below.

The character in question was introduced briefly in the epilogue of the show. We were given hints that Ezra and Thrawn were still out there somewhere, Hera Syndulla and Rex fought at the battle of Endor, and other fun details. Circling back to Hera though we were also introduced to her having a son named Jacen Syndulla.

I’m not even going to touch on how well done Hera and Kanan’s relationship was throughout the series in a way that we were shown that they have one but never publically diving into it. Instead, we’ll focus on a child who had a Jedi for a father.

We know that tends to mean that they’ll be Force-sensitive.

According to Filoni on the future of the series:

“I have not given a lot of thought to where that goes, to be honest. That doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t in the future. I’m already getting asked internally a lot about it from people here [at Lucasfilm]. Creatives here. So that’s good. I like that.”

While not having all of the details put together about Jacen though doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an idea of where to take the character:

“[The idea of Jacen Syndulla] developed, really, through the fourth season as an idea I thought would be good and meaningful. I talked to [development executive] Kiri Hart about it, and she was pretty much the one person I confided this idea in until we went to design him obviously.”

Fans of the “Legends” or the previous Extended Universe of “Star Wars” will be familiar with the name Jacen, though possibly not with a surname of Syndulla:

“It seemed, in a very small way, naming him ‘Jacen’ was a way to honor the expanded universe character of Jacen Solo who just really isn’t there anymore as the timelines have changed. I thought that’s a little bit of a wink to people that I know that was an important character. And maybe, in some way, that lives on through this character. I don’t know yet.”

While the novel Solo ended up as a Sith Lord with a level of power that would have put Kylo Ren to shame, that won’t be the clear-cut future for young Jacen here. With different parents and potentially having Ezra as a future teacher, it could allow for him to have a very different life. Of course, he could always end up as one of the Knights of Ren or having been taken out by them when they turned on Luke Skywalker.

Are you excited to more of the story to Hera’s son fleshed out in whatever Lucasfilm does as a follow up to ‘Star Wars Rebels’? Will he be one of the leading characters or will his story be left unexplored in the immediate future? Share your thoughts below!
