Star Wars: Resistance

With less than a handful of ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ episodes left to air over on Disney XD, fans are eagerly waiting for news of the next ‘Star Wars’ adventure to come to the small screen, especially since both ‘Rebels’ and ‘Clone Wars’ did such an excellent job of keeping our ‘Star Wars’ excitement going in the years between movies. Now supposedly, Disney has had a plan for awhile for what comes next after ‘Rebels,’ with rumor once being that they had always planned on ‘Rebels’ being only 3 or 4 seasons, and then launching a new series that would presumably take place during the era of the new, Rey and Kylo centered films.

But even if this were true, there are still questions: When would this new show premiere? After the new trilogy ends? Or before ‘Episode IX? Would it be live action? Or another animated adventure? Would Dave Filoni and company still be running things, even if it were live-action? Will it air exclusively on Disney’s new streaming service? And what would they even call the new show? We’ve gone from ‘Clone Wars’ to ‘Rebels,’ each one a bit militaristic in nature, could the new show follow suit?

Our only clue of late has been found by an unlikely source, but bear in mind, this is little more than speculation. While doing a “routine” check of companies registering for Trademarks, Star Wars website Yakface found some major Trademarks being established for ‘Star Wars: Resistance:’

87801117 – Toys, games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles (except clothing); hand-held units for playing electronic games for use with or without an external display screen or monitor; skins for covering and protecting apparatus; paper party favors; paper party hats; Christmas stockings; Christmas tree ornaments and decorations; snow globes

87801037– Clothing, footwear and headwear

87800997 – Paper and paper articles; cardboard and cardboard articles; printed matter; publications; books; photographs; portraits; paintings; photo-engravings; stationery; office and school supplies; school supply kits; temporary tattoo transfers; foam stamps; party bags; plastic sandwich bags; shopping bags

87800987 – Apparatus for recording, transmission, processing, and reproduction of sound, images, or data; digital media; audio books; audio and visual recordings; video game software; computer programs and software; downloadable electronic publications; downloadable game software; downloadable mobile applications; consumer electronics and accessories therefor; eyeglasses and sunglasses and accessories therefor; binoculars; decorative magnets; graduated rulers; microphones; helmets; flotation vests; protective face masks not for medical purposes; snorkels; swimming goggles; swim masks

Of course, big companies often buy trademarks just to protect their brand, but this is an unusually large amount of trademarks to purchase. And while the argument could be made that ‘Star Wars: Resistance’ could be a comic-book, regular book, or video game, the name does kind of fit with the other two, going from being about “Clones” to “Rebels” to ‘Resistance” fighters. It could be very cool to see a show fleshing out the Resistance seen in ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi,’ as they were not given all that much screen time or backstory. Lots of ideas could tie directly into the movies themselves, such as missions to recruit more followers, perhaps Leia sending out scouts to find those “allies in the Outer Rim,” the origins of the bomber squadron, etc. But who knows? This could all be for a new ‘Star Wars’ phone app, so I probably should not jump the gun just yet.

But what do you think? Does ‘Star Wars: Resistance’ sound likely to be the next show from Lucasfilm? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
