George R.R. Martin is a busy guy. From hitting up conventions to working on a ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff show, executive producing on Syfy’s ‘Nightflyers,’ doing the same on HBO’s ‘Who Fears Death,‘ he has a lot on his plate! One of these items on his to-do list is still trying to finish ‘A Song of Ice and Fire.’ Rumors have been swirling lately that there was now a plan for eight books in the series while we’re still waiting for the sixth novel, ‘The Winds of Winter.’

Due out possibly this year, ‘The Winds of Winter’ will be followed at some point by ‘A Dream of Spring’ which has been slated to close out the series for quite some time. With only having to wait seven years for the sixth installation the idea that the series would drag out into eight books might mean we’d have another 14 years to wait to read it all!

Kidding aside, Martin recently addressed this rumor on his LiveJournal after he talked about the Hugo Awards nominations.

On the other extreme, I don’t consider A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE a series either; it’s one single story, being published in (we hope) seven volumes. FWIW, Tolkien wasn’t writing a series when he wrote LORD OF THE RINGS either. He wrote a big novel and his publisher divided it into three parts, none of which stands on its own.

So there you have it, folks, the plan is still for there to be seven years. When and where we might see them is another question entirely. Hopefully, his schedule will clear up a bit so Martin can at least finish out the story and all of his fans and every media outlet under the sun can stop hounding him about the final chapters.

Are you happy to hear that we’ve only got two more books to read to wrap up ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ or were you hoping that there would be more? Do you think that Martin will continue penning stories in Westeros once this story is complete or move on to other projects? Share your thoughts below!
