The Grinch may hate Christmas, but that won’t stop him from getting into the spirit of the winter Olympics! The first teaser trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s take on the infamous Who-hating grouch has been revealed with Olympic sized fanfare.
Simply titled ‘The Grinch,’ the trailer features the fuzzy green meanie watching what looks like figure skater Adam Rippon. He then begins to daydream about becoming the next ice skating star to the sounds of Christina Aguilera’s pro-LGBTQ anthem, “Beautiful.”
Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’) will voice the Grinch in this adaptation, which was initially set for release in November of 2017, however, the studio pushed the release date back an entire year.
This is not the first time Illumination Entertainment has attempted to bring the world of Dr. Seuss to life. The studio found great financial success with their 2012 adaptation of environmentalist epic ‘The Lorax.’ The film was met with some controversy, however, as many die hard Seuss fans disapproved of the liberties that the film took with the classic story. Fans were also wary of some of the marketing tie-ins to the film, particularly the idea of The Lorax character being used to sell SUVs.
Directed by Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney, ‘The Grinch’ sees Dr. Seuss’ famous grump living alone atop Mt. Crumpit with his dog, Max, while his neighbors in Who-ville continuously disrupt his existence with their bigger, brighter, and louder celebrations. As a result, he tries to sabotage the festivities by stealing Christmas. It’s the age old story we all know and love…with maybe a few twists and turns!
‘The Grinch’ is scheduled to open in theaters on November 8, 2018. Check out the teaser trailer below!
