new mutants

We know that Josh Boone‘s take on ‘The New Mutants’ for Fox is set to be a horror film, but now he is making the bold claim that it “is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made.” Fox has been knocking it out of the park with these experimental takes on the comic book genre so after ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan,’ I’m willing to let this statement slide and give it the benefit of the doubt. While I still prefer what Marvel Studios is doing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if the previous two films are any indication this could be one of the must-watch films of 2019.

While originally scheduled for this April, the film’s release was pushed back to February of next year to “embrace the film’s horror elements” and up the fear factor. Fox has been playing around with genres in the same way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been doing for years now, though the studio is clearly willing to take things in a much darker direction.

With that in mind, the PG-13 rating is a real stretch according to Boone:

“This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.”

The “emotional core” is likely what helped push ‘Logan’ into getting an Oscar nod for best-adapted screenplay so we know that Boone is looking at creating this film with the right theme in mind.

With having multiple Stephen King adaptations in mind, the director clearly has an eye for atmospheric horror which could play well here with what we’ve seen so far.
