Marisa Tomei is set to guest-star in the second episode of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s’ second season, according to executive produce Bruce Miller, who spoke to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter TV previews.
While Miller didn’t reveal much about Tomei’s character, he did reveal that she would be playing the wife of a commander, and would be introduced in the second episode of Season 2. When the show’s star Elisabeth Moss was asked about Tomei’s involvement in the upcoming season, she was tight-lipped about specifics but did reveal that we have her to thank. Moss said:
“I don’t think I can say what she does. We’re just throwing an actor’s name out there. We can’t say anything else! I can’t say anything they didn’t say. I’m not going to be the one to get into trouble. But yes, Marisa Tomei is in and I had the pleasure of working with her in a play reading, actually, with Lena Dunham in New York. When this role came up—she wanted to do TV. I remember she said to me at the reading, she was like, ‘I want to do some more television.’ So when this role came up, I was like, ‘What about Marisa Tomei?’ I mean, it was a good get for us.”
The Oscar winner’s story will be introduced in the same episode that is set to explore the never-before-seen Colonies. In Margaret Atwood’s novel, which the hit show is based on, the Colonies are described as a barren wasteland riddled with radioactive waste, where undesirable members of society are sent to perform hard labor and eventually die. The Colonies won’t be the only expansion of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s’ world as fans can expect some very informative flashbacks this season as well. According to Miller who said:
“We’re able to see how Gilead came about.”
Season 2 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ debuts on Hulu on April 25.
