Masters Of The Universe

A ‘Masters of the Universe’ live-action theatrical reboot has been in development hell for decades, bouncing from studio to studio and creator to creator.  The project is now housed at Sony, who decided last spring that hell or high water, this film was coming out on December 18, 2019David S. Goyer (‘The Invisible’, ‘The Unborn’) is attached to direct and is also working on the screenplay with Lindsey Beer.  Now comes word that Sony hopes to see production on this movie begin in April (yes… THIS April!) in Europe.

Considering what a massive, FX-heavy film this would have to be in order to serve the source material justice, one would logically think it would take at least a year of pre-production once a script was finalized.  There hasn’t been any news regarding what the film is even about or any casting announcements.  But four months should be plenty of time to hammer all that nonsense out.

Screenwriter Beer is an up-and-comer but is already attached to some pretty huge projects, like Doug Liman’s ‘Chaos Walking’, ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’, ‘The Kingkiller Chronicles’ and ‘Short Circuit’.  She is also part of the writers room for Quentin Tarantino‘s ‘Star Trek’ for Paramount as well as that for the Hasbro movies at the same studio including ‘Dungeons & Dragons’‘M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand’, ‘ROM’ and ‘Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light’.  She must be the go-to toy movie writer, as she is also attached to pen the script for a ‘Barbie’ movie, with Alethea Jones attached to direct and Anne Hatheway rumored to star.

‘Masters of the Universe’ was, of course, a massively successful toy line created by Mattel in 1982.  The toys spawned a #1 rated syndicated cartoon and eventually a live-action film in 1987.  Unfortunately, the film bore little resemblance to the mythology established on the cartoons and in mini-comic books and moved most of the action to Earth.  Perhaps worst of all, it arrived a year or two too late, after the toys had fallen out of favor.

It seems like it will take the Power of Grayskull to actually get this movie into production by April, but maybe Goyer and Beer have the power!
